WATERGATE OR PRATUNAM DISTRICT

Popular Bangkok Shopping District near The Sukosol
Did you know that within walking distance of The Sukosol, there is a popular shopping area? Bangkok’s “Watergate” area is also known as Pratunam (“pratu” means door or gate and “nam” means water in Thai), and is so named because of an actual “water-gate” that historically regulated the flow of water to Bangkok’s canals.
It is one of the city’s busiest shopping and food neighborhoods, located between Siam shopping areas and The Sukosol Hotel.
Some of the main attractions of the area include:
Shopping & Markets
Platinum Fashion Mall
Hundreds of fashion shops over multiple floors. Very popular with tourists and local resellers who buy in bulk for better prices.
Palladium Mall & Night Market
Another fashion-focused mall with wholesale clothing, beauty products and accessories.
Shibuya Pratunam
Smaller Japanese-inspired fashion mall popular for affordable streetwear and cafés.
Local Food Highlights
Pratunam is also famous for:
- Chicken rice shops (especially the famous pink-uniform chicken rice stalls)
- Mango sticky rice vendors
- Thai desserts and street snacks
- Late-night seafood and noodle stalls
Pratunam’s attractions are within walking distance from The Sukosol, about 1.5km (20 mins), although you may have too many bags to walk back, so we recommend catching a taxi or tuk-tuk!
